Rie Kito
About Artist:Rie Kito
Rie Kito is a Japanese artist who was born in Tokyo and currently resides in San Francisco. Kito studied art since a young age from her father, Masando Kito, an accomplished and well-known painter whose works were regularly exhibited in San Francisco’s Triangle Gallery, and in other cities throughout the US and Japan.
In the mid-90’s, while Kito was active as a street artist in San Francisco and New York, she also studied Buddhism. Her work has been exhibited both in the US and Japan. In 2016 and 2017, her art works were selected and displayed at the Kohdo Art Exhibition, an annual juried exhibition organized by Kohdo Art Association, held at the National Art Center in Tokyo. In 2016, during the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival, she conducted an interactive art display “Wish For World Peace” in partnership with the Asian Art Museum for its 50th anniversary. In 2017, she displayed her “Thousand Wish Project” through social media platforms. She has recently completed a group exhibit in Tokyo in March 2018.
Artist Statement
When I first started drawing cranes, I wished upon the cranes that my dreams would come true; wishing for success, recognition, and other desires. After more than 20 years of participating various art projects and studying Buddhism, I am now drawing each cranes hoping someone else’s wishes to come true. My art is for people who fight to cure illness, who search for inner peace, and who make efforts toward world peace.

1995年から数年サンフランシスコ、ニューヨークにてストリートアート、グループショーを通し千羽鶴のアートを発表していた中、自らの限界を感じ全てのアート活動を封印し仏教を学び20年、再び描くという道を選び5年がたちました。
当時使っていたネームタッグ(ストリートアートで良く使われる、小さな名刺サイズのステイッカー)を自らのキャンバスとして、1枚1枚、1羽1羽、1人1人の世界平和への願い、祈りを日々の移り変わる季節の中にモザイクのように繋ぎ合わせ表現しました。
今回はこの約1年半の間に制作した67点を展示させて頂きます。
各作品は全て同じサイズの正方形のパネルからなり、これからも描き続けるであろう人生の壮大な壁画の1画面であるという事をイメージして頂ければ有り難いです。
